PLASTER PROJECT INFO

PLASTER PROJECT:  We are getting to actually carve, cut, shave, and sand this work of art! This is the SUBTRACTIVE method of sculpture.  The other projects have been the ADDITIVE method of sculpture.   THIS PROJECT IS MESSY...get a tarp, blanket, or table cloth...and if you can work outside...that isn't a bad idea!  But before we get messy...we have to have a plan!  In your sketchbook come up with a couple design ideas for the block of plaster.  I would like this project to have both geometric & organic aspects. I think the juxtaposition can be done in so many different ways, and can be as subtle  or as dramatic as you wish to make it.  It can be objective or non-objective.  Yes, I'm leaving it pretty open ended, but I like seeing you shining through.  Avoid very thin forms & stay flexible.  Plaster has a mind of its own at times, and you need to be able to adapt to "happy accidents" that might happen.  I need to see the sketch so I can address any possible issues or changes that might need to be made to make this a successful work of art for you.  PLEASE SEND ME YOUR SKETCH/IDEAS WEDNESDAY (March 18th).

We want to spend about two weeks on this project.  The longer the plaster sets...the more challenging it becomes to carve.

THERE ARE SOME DEMO VIDEOS AT THE BOTTOM OF THE PAGE!

TOOLS
These are just some possible tools for you to use for your plaster project.  I found some at Harbor Freight.  They have good prices & coupons! You can also look at Lowe's and Home Depot for some of these items.

This rasp set is more for refining...not taking off large amounts of plaster.
This rasp will take off larger amounts. Think of it like a cheese grater.
This rasp is a smaller version of the above rasp.  It will take off larger amounts of plaster but is a bit easier to handle.  I did not see this at Harbor Freight.
I believe you can find it at Lowe's and Home Depot.

This is a carving set at Harbor Freight.  I feel you can find something like it at any home/hardware store.  If you are in a pinch..I think you could use a flat head screw driver...but that is not ideal.

SAND PAPER!!!  Different grit sand paper will be needed as you are finishing up the project to smooth your surface. Dollar Tree does have some, but I think they only have smaller grit.

This primer can be found at Lowe's.  You will need to prime your piece before you paint it with acrylic.  If you don't...the paint will peel off of the plaster.  If you find another spray primer...it should be "ok".  I do know this one works.  If you have another plan for your piece than painting it with acrylic...you will need to let me know ahead of time so we can chat about it.
